Before you read my story, perhaps there are certain facts that we need to understand.
It is a little lengthy but it is worth reading, so that be it current bloggers and future bloggers, we know what to do and what not do for now and for the future.

The story begins
After it was brought to my attention by Kitchen Tigress aka KT, on 6 May 2015 on the said post.
First I didn't know which post she was referring to. So I actually emailed to her.
Upon realizing my mistake, I immediately set the situation right by rephrasing the methodology to the recipes that I took from. (A common practice by bloggers). I assumed that then it will be no longer be a cut and paste situation which was wrong.
You may asked, why don't I obediently followed Kitchen Tigress' demand?
The reason I can't delete it, is because it forms part of my learning journey and that is my experience with tried and tested recipes. My blog post will be incomplete without a recipe, isn't it?
In the food blog-sphere, adapting recipes from each other is a common practice, just like Kitchen Tigress, she adapted many recipes from blogs and book, rephrasing them and credit back to its source.
Just like when you are told that you had done wrong, you set the situation right. In school, we were trained to do correction when we were marked wrong. I see this as part of my learning journey too.
After the editing, I didn't think that by doing the same practice as others as well as like hers, that is rephrasing, I will be called a thief after.
On 7 May 2015 at , I received a warning email from Kitchen Tigress. Since I was out the whole day, I didn't get a chance to read it.On 7 May 2015, I assumed after 5pm, I had my photographs plastered on her blog and calling me thieves even before I can do any explanation on my action because I was out.
I wasn't even aware of that until around 8 - 9pm when I got home and was informed by my blog followers that such action was taken.
Subsequent days, I was give more names like pond scum and lowlife.
I did further rephrasing to make sure that it is no longer a cut and paste. Still my photographs hang on in Kitchen Tigress' blog.
That is the reason why I made that police report on 9 May 2015.
All these years of blogging, I always thought food blogs are about sharing your joy or your failure on your food learning journey.
Why bloggers set up public food blogs? Am I right to assume that they wanted to share their experiences? They are hoping that others will attempt it?
We take each others recipe as our kitchen fun. We didn't mind having our recipes posted in each other's blogs as there is always acknowledgements. In fact, we love to share. Eager to know how was the outcome for the others. We help each other to troubleshoot when recipes didn't work. We analyse recipes, we do comparison. We formed bake along sessions, theme bakes/cook events, we have bloggers' party. We inspired each other with gorgeous photography and beautiful blog post. We shared knowledge on baking/cooking method. All these are done in the spirit of sharing the same passion.
For me, I am delighted if readers tried my recipes. I shared the joy if the recipe works for my reader and I tried to find out how to help, if it doesn't.
I felt honored if the tried and tested recipes are tried by bloggers and got posted, be it a good or a bad experiment for the blogger. If it turn out well, we celebrate. If it didn't, we encourage each other to try again.
On 13 May 2015, now that I know that rephrasing is also fine with her. Then with the edited version of my old blog recipes. I really do not know why I should be called a thief now.

As much as you want to exercise whatever rights, sometime, we need to learn how to let go especially when correction had been made.
I believe between humans we need to be respectful to each other. No one is more superior than the other. No human is made 100% perfect. We each had our fair share of imperfection.
At the end of our life journey, we will be happier when we join the earth, feeling dignified if we treated others with the same.
Well Said. I am a silent reader delighting in reading food blogs. It has made me a better cook from a person who knows nuts about cooking. Sometimes just to drool over the photos is enough inspiration to strive to cook a yummy meal for the family. Let this incident pass. We are cultured people and we do not call people names as it is very distasteful.

Delete1. Did you use her recipe without her permission in a circulated medium without proper attribution? YES
2. Did you comply with the demands of the original producer of the content? NO
3. Did you subsequently comply? YES which essentially negates all the earlier convoluted reasoning you typed earlier.
4. Have you accepted what you did is wrong? YES… please refer to point 3.
In any published environment (electronic, print or otherwise, this is PLAGERISM)
Perhaps you should stop taking pages out of the Govt playbook by shifting blame, offering quasi apologies and feigning ignorance of rules and accept what you did and raise you hands in a proper show of Mea Culpa.

What is the purpose of having an open to public Blog, if it is not for sharing and spreading the word?
What is the purpose of putting the recipe out in public and not for all to emulate?
THE PERSON IN CONCERN HAS SHARED YOUR RECIPE IN FULL AND HAS CREDITED TO YOU. I feel that is totally alright. If she has used your recipe and changed it using her own words, it might do injustice to the original recipe. Therefore she probably state in full and credited you. Is this not enough?
Is there a section in your blog or recipe that stipulates what one has to do in order to be in line with your rules? Otherwise they will be Named and Shamed publicly?
You are equally guilty of the wrong conduct if you think the person in concern is of bad conduct?
As an established Food Blogger, instead of sharing of best practices, you choose to humiliate.
Remember what you say about her also reflects upon yourself too. Always give room for others to step down.
Make friends and not enemies, you are in for the long haul. Stop creating animosity in the Blogger scene.
Wonder if this was created because you have lost your audience to other budding Food Bloggers? Wonder if this fiasco is to draw people back to your blog traffic?
Really sad to read such stuff here. I have been a fan of yours from the last 5 years. But this has seriously put a bad taste to my mouth that now going forward, all the recipes I see in here, will only make me think of the person cooking it, has an ugly persona. That itself, even if the food does taste well, my gut will involuntarily puke in protest, to know that it is from a person with such intentions.

You may have used the text but you credited her from the start. She was rude right from the initial request. But you have amended the post, so there's no reason for her continued nastiness towards you. After 1 year of blogging and still new to blog-sphere, I was so taken aback on this episode. I'm like you, always thought food blogs are about recipes sharing, the joy, failure and tips on the food learning journey that posted by bloggers. Like you too, I always credit the source where I've taken the recipes or adapted from. This is to tell anyone who chanced upon my blog that I've learned/attempted that particular recipe from someone else and shared it.
Even if I've credited the source but I've to rephrase the method/s just because someone has already used that particular method (so as NOT an infringement of copyright), I wonder if this is logical?
I hope that this unpleasant episode won't dampen your passion. Let's continue to inspire one another with our shared knowledge on baking/cooking methods.

If KT was unhappy about the cut and paste thing, she could have approached you politely and not do what she did. As far as I am concerned, if someone took my recipe (even my original ones) and published word for word, as long as my post is credited, it is fine. I really don't see what's the hoo ha about copyright infringement when you credited her recipe to her. You have handled it well and I say you troop on! I hope you'll fight bravely because I do not see any wrong in reposting the recipe. If she doesn't want people to post her recipe or try her recipe, she probably shouldn't post.
The irony? I go to her Marble Cake (Tang Mian method), go to check plagarism site, and it's found with significant plagarism. Zz.

Edith dear, I'm appalled at how things had developed. U know I he been a keen supporter of yours. This whole plagiarism thingy is making me nervous... In my younger days when I studied law and literature, we were told to quote and unquote cases and phrases... But always referring back to where the case or phrase was lifted to avoid plagiarism.. So does that mean the education industry have erred ? Sure, the common practice of copying and pasting then crediting back is so rampant now (and I tell u, even more so in the China food blogging world).. Sure, it's wrong (if it's truly wrong).. So ? Is there no better way to solve this? I know u will take necessary actions.. Just see how u apologised upfront. Calling names is definitely not right. R u not someone's daughter, sibling or parent? It is very disheartening to see such bickering on blogosphere but I know you can ride it out. Another of my favorite blogger was called names before and it somehow ground her blogging to a near halt. Never let it happen to you!
The beautiful thing about the internet is for one and all to share. If anyone should feel possessive about their works even when credited, perhaps they should go offline and do it the old fashion way with books. I say, Edith, just do what you do so well.

Remember she held a contest on her blog, inviting readers to submit a national day dish with a short description? DeleteHi Edith, I was redirected from her blog to yours and I just want to say that I, too, am appalled not only by KT's inappropriate behavior but the rudeness in which she responds to her followers, which in turn incites others to be rude to her followers. Frankly, I'm amazed she has any followers at all. You have done all you can to remedy the error and she continues to defame your character with the blog questioning whether you are a "thief". I agree with another comment that the nastiness and negativity that emanates from her blog leaves a nasty taste in your mouth so much so that any recipe she shares is tainted with ugliness. Who wants to eat that?? Keep your head up. I certainly do not consider you a thief and I certainly do not believe that was your intent. Quite frankly, I think the "Tigress" in the Kitchen needs to be put back in her cage because she is out of control. My personal opinion of course. I have ceased looking at her blog because of all the negativity riddled in her interaction with her followers. No friend. No follow. In my opinion.

I was a KT follower until I saw the nasty name calling she had on her blog; not only that, she can be condescending to her followers in which I've been turning a blind-eye to; but after reading her recent post on Edith, that's it, I can no longer tolerate her rudeness.

DeleteHi Edith, I am here to express my support for you as well. I have been an avid cook and baker since I was 15, not just in Asian cooking but also all sorts of cuisines. I was absolutely mortified when I came across her blog--I have never seen a cook blogger as rude, bitter, and abrasive as her. Cooking is a form of art and an expression of love for many, including myself, and for her to behave this way is AN INSULT to cooking.
ReplyDeleteBeing a good cook is NOT a justification to behave poorly towards others, whether in person or online. Like what another commenter said, it doesn't matter if her recipes are excellent, her behavior and attitude will leave a bad taste in your mouth and soul. If she is so concerned about others stealing 'her' recipes (she isn't even the originator), she shouldn't publish them at all.
A person who is angry/nasty/bitter constantly has psychological issues, and this commonly stems from childhood experiences. If the primary caregiver didn't help her to develop a healthy self-esteem, in her adulthood, she will put people down in order to feel better about herself--this feeds her sense of ego.
I can totally understand why you would be distressed and distraught over her attacks towards you, but do deeply consider that this is NOT about you (it's nothing personal), it's that she clearly has issues. You just happened to cross her path--it could have happened to anyone. Sorry for your bad luck!

Hi Edith, I was looking for a Castella mold, and for some unknown reason, Google shows this spate of unhappiness too. So I went to KT blog to read, then back to yours to read too. I don't know the right or wrong of things. But you know me from eons ago.. With KC forum, I had my fair share of copy/cut/paste etc. I set so many rules about that, and everyone thinks I am over and beyond paranoid. I have known you PERSONALLY for years.
