Kudzu herbal drink 粉葛水

I am going to start a series of herbal and medicinal drinks.

I need to record all these beneficial drinks as I strongly believe in TCM method of treating certain illnesses.

It is also good information to pass down to my next generation as I realised that many of the valuable treatments were lost from my grandma's time.  Luckily I still have a 70 something years old aunt who is still very alert and knowledgeable about such stuff.

Today, I am brewing Kudzu herbal drink 粉葛水 for my son as he was having persistent fever despite nearly completing a dose of antibiotic and paracetamol.

I managed to find the vegetable stall selling this.  As Kudzu is really tough, it is hard to peel and cut into chunk size.  I managed to get the vegetable stall lady to peel and chop for me.

Some research shows that Kudzu reduce high blood pressure, relieve chronic migraines and ease aches in the shoulders and neck. The flavonoids in kuzu have been shown to lower cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of blood clots, and protect against heart disease.

Benefit: Kudzu drink 粉葛水 can dispel the heat from the body.  The carrot and honey dates add to the sweetness.

What you need:
Serve 4

1 kg of Kudzu 粉葛, peeled
3 honey dates 蜜棗
3 big carrots, peeled
3 litres water

Method:

Cut kudzu and carrots into chunk size.

Rinse honey dates.

Put all the ingredients together in a big pot.

Bring to a brisk boil and lower heat and simmer (Med/Low) for 3 hours.  (You need to see bubbles boiling)

If the person is having fever, drink two cups.  If just to dispel heat, one cup will do.

Note:

This is a cooling drink thus it is not suitable for pregnant woman or asthma patient.
